BIRDING SAFARIS


In terms of size, Uganda is the richest country for birds in Africa, with over 1000 species recorded. Which is more than half of the continents bird population and over 10% of bird species recorded through out the world. Nearly 30 species are endemic to the Albertine Rift on Uganda s western boarder with Congo.

Uganda is endowed with various climate changes, which have led to a variety of habitats conducive for various bird species. The exciting species you will view include birds of water and land shore, birds of scrub and woodland, forest birds and birds of the open plain.

In Bwindi bird watchers visit to Ruhija and Buhoma will be rewarding. The forest birding ranks with the best in Uganda, with 348 forest bird species of which are 23 highly localized Albertine Rift endemics present. It offers some of the finest forest montane forest birding in Africa and is a key destination for any birder visiting Uganda.

Other birding destinations include Rwenzori National Park with 195 bird species and most commonly seen are the Turaco, Fisco Shrike, Crowned Hornbill, Black Kite, Augur Buzzard and Crowned Crane, a stroll along the Buffalo wall, along wetland to see some water birds.
Mt.Elgon has 300 bird species, bird lovers will enjoy the endangered lammergeyers, Guinea fowls, the Jackson s francolin, sunbirds and Turacos.

While in Kibale National Park birders are in for a treat with 335 species recorded including the endemic Prirogrine's ground thrush
Birders shouldn't miss Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a superb community development fringing the park. To be seen here is the Yellow Spotted Nectar, Green Breasted Pitta, Yellow Rumped Tinker bird, Little Greenbul, African Pita, Crowned Eagle and Black Bee-Eater.
Visit Kaniyo-Pabidi and Rabongo forests some rare tropical species.
Mgahinga National Park is blessed with a unique bird fauna; 115 bird species have thus far been recorded within the park, including several species endemic to the East Congo Montane region.

There is no need to climb to the top of the volcanoes for birding because most of the avian attractions may be found on the excellent Gorge Trail, which loops half way up Mt.Sabinyo transversing a variety of montane habitats.

Birders interested in savannah bird species should endeavour to visit Lake Mburo National Park. Rubango forest offers a variety and conducive habitat for bird watchers. Here, 40 forest species have been recorded which include Harrier Hawk, Green Pigeon, Narina Trogon, Grey-Backed Cameroptera and Double Toothed Barbet. For visitors to experience the real exposure of Lake Mburo National Park, one must take the Kazuma track which goes through a wooded grassland where you can not miss the Black Bellied Bustards often patrolling the area.

Apart from the usual water birds like; Pink-backed pelican, Darter, White pelican, Yellow-billed duck, Long-tailed cormorant, White winged black tern and Greater cormorant, Fish eagle, Pied kingfisher, African fin foot, Great white egret, Night heron, consider an intensive escaped for the little and rare but interesting ones which include the Apalis, Eremomera and crombecs. You will not miss a diversity of starlings and cuckoos.

Fauna recorded include; 400 bird species which is 60% of Uganda s total, some of which can t be found else where in East Africa and some of the continent s most spectacular and sought after birds.
